BBC Culture cast a wide net in order to put together this list of the greatest comedies of all time. Some of the critics who participated review films for newspapers, magazines or websites; others edit film coverage; some are academics who teach film studies at universities, contribute to scholarly journals or have written books; and several film curators at museums and repertory cinemas are also included. Everyone who was asked to participate was required to submit a ranked top 10 list — in our calculations of the final list a number one vote was worth 10 points, a number two vote was worth nine points, all the way down to the 10th choice which received one vote.
