This recent study, which surveyed more than 2, women ages 18 to 40, captures what a lot of women are realizing about their orgasms: There are still clear obstacles standing between women and the pleasure they deserve. Fifty percent of women said their partners were almost there but just couldn't quite bring them home. These stats are unsurprising when you realize how essential the clitoris is in helping a woman achieve orgasm. In a study of undergraduate students, women and men were just as likely to mislabel the clitoris on a diagram.

DURING my teens, my parents made me join a swimming team where I had to swim hundreds of laps every morning before the sun came up. It was supposed to teach me discipline - but the most valuable thing I learned was how to orgasm discreetly in a public swimming pool. It is so easy to think about the fantasy of how we think sex should be, that we don't actually enjoy it. An orgasm is a transient peak sensation of intense sexual pleasure and varies from person to person. They can be whole body orgasms, extended orgasms, those which happen only with intercourse, clitoral stimulation or even just kissing — and everyone describes them differently. We can place so much importance on trying to achieve orgasm at the same time as a partner, or how good the orgasm will be, that we often forget about enjoying the sensations of touch and sexual pleasure throughout the whole lovemaking experience.
