The number of teenage girls being exploited by fake model scouts has increased drastically in the last few years because of social media, according to leading model agencies. Scammers are using Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat to extract explicit photos from vulnerable young people, which are later used against them to extort money. Leading model agencies, including Storm Model Management and BMA Models, have warned young people and their parents or guardians to be "vigilant and defensive" in such instances, reported the Guardian. Typically, fraudsters will contact girls by claiming to be recruiting for a modelling agency and ask them for topless photos or to remove their clothes during a Skype interview.

Last week, the publication reported that people are setting up fake Instagram and Facebook accounts and posing as scouts for Storm Model Management, the company that represents supermodels including Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, and Cindy Crawford. From there, scammers contact teen girls and ask them to send nude photos and take part in video calls, during which scammers ask their targets to take off their clothes. According to The Guardian , there have been cases revolving around modeling scams in just the past year alone, and modeling agencies report getting dozens of phone calls and emails about these activities each week. These scams were becoming so frequent that Storm Modeling Management publicly addressed them in August.
